Stories are made
by people.

Digital Placebo is an independent literary imprint for stories that ask something of their readers. We believe the most important part of a book is the person who made its choices. We give fiction the space to move at a human pace.

A book has a voice.
It should belong to someone.

We publish stories made from the imagination and judgment of people. Tools may help with the work. They do not get the final word.

The imagined can leave a real mark.

A placebo is a provocation: the expectation of relief can change what someone experiences. Fiction makes a different, less clinical wager. The people in a book never existed. The room where they met is an arrangement of words. Still, a reader can leave that room carrying grief, tenderness, or a question that did not exist before entering it.

That is the part that interests us. Not whether a story can imitate life perfectly, but whether it can make us pay closer attention to the life we actually have. We know the bargain: the event is invented; the feeling need not be.

And digital? It is where many of these books will be met, held, annotated, and returned to. It names a medium, not an author. A screen can make a book available; it cannot decide what the book is trying to say.

Not every silence is empty.

We are drawn to fiction that gives its readers a little difficult freedom: to notice what is withheld, to disagree with the narrator, to sit beside a character without being told how to feel. A book does not have to raise its voice to ask something that lasts.

Our standard is not speed, novelty, or the number of things a page can do. It is whether the words, the design, and the way a book reaches its reader belong to the same intention. A publisher should make the work clearer to encounter without standing between the work and the person who came to read it.

The story is still ours. The responsibility for its choices is, too.
